Skateboarding was a big part of Steven’s life at a young age. It was his time to exercise and socialize, and often to release a lot of built up frustration, skating for hours on end.
He started skating with Luke van Niekerk, one of his closest friends and fellow “Youtuber”. They used to play all the Tony Hawk play station games from start to finish and learnt most of their tricks from this. When asked, he says “I’m not actually sure how exactly I got into it. I just enjoyed doing a sport that wasn’t conventional in school and the Pro’s doing it looked super kick-ass”.
This was all before moving to Uplands College in the country side. His hometown skate park was a place called “Thrashers”. He would spend at least once a week there and then 3 to 4 times a week during holidays. He once snapped his wrist skating at Thrashers jumping a fun-box as he landed badly and slipped backwards. He did way bigger tricks before and this was just a simple jump. But what do they say about Murphy?
He likes to power through when he skates as it gives him a sense of control. He says it’s his manly time which he still does from time to time.
It is evident he loves this sport; “How it felt getting big airs or landing a sweet grind was the greatest! I used an element deck when I skated. The board was designed for street skating, not vert. Big stairs and grind poles was my thing back then”
