An ode to a great friend, by Lucas van Niekerk

The exact date and time escape me, but we met in High School, while we both lived in Pretoria, through our love for skateboarding and later for music. He was also quite a good rugby player in High School.

Although we never attended the same school, we mostly used to hang out outside of school time. But I remember that he was the lead in all his High School plays and that he was a prefect in High School as well!

He has been one of my closest friends since we met and has never let me down. In terms of being dependable, he is my most dependable friend!

If I had to name his qualities, the list would be never-ending. So I'll just name a few, Steven is: charismatic, hard-working, passionate, focused, caring and most of all extremely funny (in terms of a sense of humour, not funny as in strange). Steve's passion is his strongest emotion.

Steve is a no-fuss guy but being a model, he blow dries his hair when he needs to look good. Otherwise, he just towel dries it.

Steve is into his branded clothing, but he buys easy wear when on a budget and although he lives healthily, he enjoys the occasional trip to McDonald's. He also loves his sweets and always goes for any kind of sugary treats or delight. Oh, and then, he dislikes not being able to brush his teeth. It really freaks him out.

His music is on a different level altogether.

Let me say; If I was the guitarist for Mumford and Sons, he'd be the lead singer. He's a gifted vocalist, instrumentalist and he has a fine-tuned musical ear. If I was Eminem, I'd want him to be my producer.

My favourite memory is when we got lost on Table Mountain and had to find our way back with the sun slowly setting over the horizon. It was both terrifying and enjoyable… but mostly terrifying.
