Rift is a first in student production; being a son of parents who created time travel; David comes back from the future in a desperate search for the truth and nothing but the truth! Upon meeting Thabo’s older bossy sister, David discovers the real reason behind Thabo’s evil nature in the future. When David’s true intent on killing them is revealed, Thabo’s sister attempts to shoot David, whereby Thabo stands up in front of the bullet and is hit in the shoulder.

This comes to the South Africa’s screens as very brave as South Africans are used to taking the classical route of drama, romance or comedy when it comes to filmmaking. Rift creates an African action figure in which more Africans can relate with, especially with the use of South African languages.

The narrative of the story does get a little bit confusing, in terms of structure. However, the cast do an exceptional job in making the characters believable, because that’s the only way audiences can relate, they need to believe. A special recognition to the hacker character that brought in the comic relief throughout the movie: A job well done indeed to the whole cast and crew. The short has immense potential and a definite, clearer structure can be developed in order to make this movie a blockbuster no.1.

The vision of the Rift is amazing, however, the graphics is a representation of how little money is been invested within the industry. The film does need to be commended for pulling off the graphics without looking too cheap. The sets were believable as well the way in which the future looks, because then again, no one knows what the future looks like.

Rating: 7/10
